First book!

We just sold our first book! It was a rather brilliant edition of What's the Time Mr Wolf - with a finger puppet of the wolf.

Picture pinched from (shhhh) amazon.

Word of the Week

I really like words and in particular, weird words that mean obvious things. So I've decided to comandeer the chalk board and write a word of the week on it!

This week's word is discombobulated (dis-com-bob-yule-ay-ted) which means confused.

Tara's Spooky Picks

One of the things I'm going to do is to highlight a set of books each week - usually along some kind of theme. I suspect these will mostly end up being my own favourites, but I'll try to include some others!

For the first week the shop is open, I'm having a scary theme.

Picture Book

Where the Wild Things Are – Maurice Sendak

One of the best picture books ever – when Max misbehaves and is sent to bed early, he sails to the land where the Wild Things are and becomes their king.

Beautiful pictures and a sweet story.

Developing Readers

The Worst Witch & The Worst Witch Strikes Again – Jill Murphy

Before Harry had even heard of Hogwarts, there was Mildred Hubble and Miss Cackle’s academy for Witches. Mildred may be a witch, but she always seems to mess up – her spells go wrong, she can hardly ride a broom, and her cat isn’t even black!

Funny but still spooky!

Confident Readers

Groosham Grange – Anthony Horowitz

One of my all-time favourite books – David knows there’s something wrong at his new school, but can he find out what it is before it’s too late? This is a book that’s full of humour but it’s still scary and exciting.

Witch Week – Diana Wynne Jones

This is another of my favourite books. “Someone in this class is a witch,” reads the note Mr Crossley finds in a pile of Geography books. Everyone suspects Nan Pilgrim, but what if she’s not the only one?

You don’t need to have read any of the other Chrestomanci novels to enjoy this one thoroughly, an enchanting page turner!

Older Readers

Uncle Montague’s Tales of Terror – Chris Priestley

As Uncle Montague tells Edgar his most frightening stories, it gradually becomes clear how he knows them – he was there!

Fast paced and genuinely scary!

Skulduggery Pleasant – Derek Landy

When Stephanie’s horror writer uncle dies, and leaves her everything, she’s pursued by evil forces who want a mysterious key. She gets help from an unexpected source – Skulduggery Pleasant, a wisecracking detective with a skull for a head!

Thrilling and intriguing – I can’t wait for the next one!

Rainbow wizard

I just had a Facebook message from my best friend, to let me know that Dumbledore's been outed, by the inimitable JKR.

I'd hoped that she would make one of her characters gay, for realism's sake. Because of course we all read Harry Potter for the realism!

I rather thought it would be Lupin or Tonks, but she quashed that comprehensively in the last two books.

The next Mugglecast should be fun!

(Incidentally, if you're a fan of Harry Potter, I cannot recommend Mugglecast highly enough!)
